I love both songs though. When I was growing up in the ’90s, there weren’t enough Lizzos in the world. The Spice Girls and Destiny’s Child had their own version of “girl power,” it came from a different place I think. But something about Lizzo’s execution is way more authentic, more believable, and more of what I want to rally behind right now.

However, throughout the entire song, there isn’t a single E♭ chord. This creates a consistent sense that the song is being pushed forward, because we never land on the safe and comfy resolution our ears expect.

I started to experiment with some of the horn samples in the pack and, though I didn’t end up using any, they gave me the idea to feature a trumpet player. I immediately thought of my friend and frequent collaborator, Jake Baldwin. I met Jake in Boston in 2010 while I was at Berklee and he was down the street studying at NEC. We started making music together right away in our New York-based hip-hop collective, Tiger Speak, but in recent years, we’ve both relocated to other cities.

This scene, where Marissa shoots Trey (I never watched The OC but I’m getting this all from the YouTube description), was where a lot of people were introduced to the artistry of Imogen Heap. Her song “Hide and Seek” stands alone for the British singer, and in this clip, where one character is killing another by choking him, the gunshot by Marissa is justified to the viewers by Heap’s line, “It’s all for the best.”

I found a MIDI version of the piece and brought it into Ableton Live. The MIDI file put the left and right hand of the piano on separate tracks, so I used separate instruments for each one: a palm-muted guitar for the right, and a synth pluck for the left.

But such a dismissal would be disrespectful to the medium, and there are plenty of legit reasons to pay tribute to a beloved song by producing a chiptune cover.

These are some of the elements that set this program apart from a typical private lesson or online course. We also know that not everyone benefits from the same exact balance of all of these features. Some learners require more planning, while others may require more validation. Your mentor will help find the equilibrium that’s right for you.

The first is free-hand, which is to say that you record piano and vocals at the same time and even if they’re off tempo the two are synced together. It will sound more free and raw, but you’ll have a hard time syncing rhythmic elements and timed processing such as delay and reverb in a consistent manner. The second way is to record on grid, whereby you’ll record to a click-track to steady your tempo. In this case, it’s best to record one track at a time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sing to yourself while you record your keyboard takes.

Evan Zwisler is a NYC-based musician who is most notably known for his work with The Values as a songwriter and guitarist. He is an active member of the Brooklyn music scene, throwing fundraisers and organizing compilations for Planned Parenthood and the Anti-Violence Project. He started playing music in the underground punk scene of Shanghai with various local bands when he was in high school before going to California for college and finally moving to New York in 2012.

The highly influential course instructors are: Kenta Yonesaka (Unlocking the Truth, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper), Tim Leitner (Carly Simon, Adam Ezra, Billy Joel), Brian Losch (Maria Schnieder, Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile), and Leon Kelly (Run the Jewels, Kaytranada, Action Bronson).

In this article, we’ll revisit classic music videos that feature thought-provoking concepts and communicate the message of their song perfectly, in ways that we can borrow ourselves as DIY musicians.

In 2013, Marvin Gaye’s estate sued Robin Thicke, T.I. (Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr.), and Pharrell Williams, claiming that their smash hit “Blurred Lines” stole from Gaye’s 1977 song “Got to Give It Up,” as well as from Funkadelic’s “Sexy Ways” from 1974. Though Thicke and Pharrell were found guilty as songwriters, there are no proven musical similarities between the two songs. The jury was influenced by the “feel” and “groove” of the two works, components that are not protected under copyright law. Many musicians and legal experts were concerned that this decision set a dangerous legal precedent and blurred the lines of what musical elements are protectable.

You know that we humans rely on each other. And I think this is especially true of the music community. DIY musicians, whether part-time or full-time, are generally a welcoming and helpful bunch of people. In my experience, they’re encouraging, motivating, and want to see you succeed. That’s why it’s a great idea to connect with them in Facebook groups or subReddits.
