Pedalboards too cumbersome for your setup? We just launched a new free course with one of our favorite guitarists of all time, Kaki King, on how and why she uses a digital pedalboard, a MIDI foot controller, and expression pedal, in replacement of her analog board, on the world tour circuit. Here’s her explaining why she’ll never go back.

Next, reach out to any bands or artists you want to play with and get their availabilities. You should also reach out to local venues to get a sense of what’s open. Ask about either a range of dates or specific days. Making contact to start a conversation is a major step to getting yourself behind the wheel, instead of waiting around for someone to pick you up.

You know that wretched feeling you get when it’s 3 AM and you still haven’t begun loading out from the venue, and you have to be up in three hours to make it to your next show in Sacramento?

Our Soundfly Mentorship program is built on our belief that accountability and guidance can have a huge impact on helping students reach their goals and develop their musical identities. We currently offer mentorship with seven courses, including those mentioned earlier, as well as a Beta program called the Headliners Club. Our mentors are passionate, experienced musicians with a shared love of personalized learning and artistic curiosity.

Some quick and handy approaches to getting a great sounding recording of your drumkit, even if you only have a couple mics lying around your home studio!

Prechoruses can either be repeated before each chorus (and used occasionally as a bridge) or they can be taken out after they are used the first time. Either works just fine, as long as you build your song around its use with intention. The prechorus is an important tool for writers to test out in order to tie any loose ends together, or add new melodic hooks in to beef the song’s singability up. Definitely take the time to experiment with this form.

“[Soundfly] has provided an avenue for non-professional artists like myself who have the passion to grow as a musician, to learn how to do so in a manner that is tailored to one’s specific artistic goals, reasonably affordable without compromising quality whatsoever, and all in an empowering environment of support.”

That point hits home even more for self-guided learners like myself. As you’re practicing, try to focus in on things you’ve never done before. For me, that’s stride piano at a fast tempo. When you achieve one milestone, ask what’s next. By continuing to push yourself into new areas of exploration, you’ll continue to push your skills forward and make sure you’re actually improving the way you want to. Luckily, we have all sorts of online courses that might help you find new directions to push yourself.

This idea has changed my life as a part-time musician (I’m not exaggerating): Do one thing today that will move your career forward, even the least little bit. Don’t think of all the things you want to be doing — all the things that could boost your career. Just think of one of those things. Then do it.

In particular, the overall aim of all of our programs is to promote active learning, where students are putting concepts into action, getting feedback, and making progress by doing, rather than passively ingesting information. We do that through intense personalization — by providing a personal mentor matched to your needs and a structure that supports your learning experience.
