Say what you want about rap metal, Rage Against the Machine brought it. They brought their supreme rhythmic tightness and their politically leaning message, which is more pertinent now than ever. In the mid-’90s, they were blowing up, and they were asked to play SNL. (I can only guess that after this incident, whoever asked them to play was fired.)

Let’s say that we ran two of these sine waves simultaneously. We’d find that the total amplitude would be the sum of the two identical sine waves. So far, so good. But what if we were to “flip” the waveform, so that what was a peak is now a trough, and vice versa? What we get is… silence.

My production challenge this month was an exercise in adaptivity. Instead of going out and finding outdoor sounds to capture and sample, like we did for April’s monthly challenge, we were tasked with the wonderful opportunity to use sounds from a brand new hip-hop adjacent sample pack that launched recently on Splice. Otherwise, stick to pedals, and look for something big and tough enough to handle your tone (and the mosh pits). Here are some of my favorite choices for punk musicians:

So, I wanted to hear someone play the chaconne in tempo, just to hear how it works. And since no one seems to play it that way, I finally went and got the MIDI from Dave’s JS Bach MIDI page and put it into Ableton Live. I added a bunch of triple meter Afro-Cuban drum patterns to help me feel the beat, and had them enter and exit wherever I heard a natural section boundary in the music. Contact me to hear the MIDI-only version.
